The rear window has been replaced with a digital rearview mirror — a new concept in car design
At the New York Auto Show, the Polestar 4 model stunned the audience with an exceptional decision: to forgo the rear window. Instead of the traditional method of looking back, drivers are offered to rely on a digital rearview mirror, regular side mirrors, and various assistance systems. For some critics, this innovation is seen as equivalent to wearing an eye patch, considering it stylish and noting that seeing with one eye is already sufficient. However, Polestar sees it differently.
On the contrary, the manufacturer promotes the absence of the rear window as a «advantage.» They claim that the unique design «enhances the interior space and rear visibility.» While this statement raises doubts, developers assert that the digital rearview mirror provides a wide viewing angle, which can be an important aspect for drivers.
The automaker doesn’t stop there: in the promotional video, it is emphasized that the lack of a rear window is one of the main functional advantages of the Polestar 4. The clip also claims that creating smooth lines would have been impossible without this bold decision.
Although Polestar stands firm on its decision, potential issues are easy to see. For example, when parking in the rain or snow, the camera will need to be cleaned. Additionally, during movement, the airflow is intended to protect the lenses from moisture and dirt, which can also be challenging in real-world conditions.
Recently, there has been increased interest in the Polestar 6 electric roadster. During a recent interview, company representatives emphasized that demand for this model far exceeds the initially planned quantity of 500 units, indicating the popularity of this car.
