Porsche has unveiled its plans for utilizing its V8 engine beyond the year 2030
Despite emissions issues, automotive giant Porsche has decided to retain its 4.0-liter V8 engine with twin turbocharging until the early 2030s.
Porsche plans to upgrade its engine to comply with stricter Euro-7 standards, which will come into effect in July 2029. However, due to stricter noise level regulations, the signature V8 sound may lose its sharpness and sporty character.
The 4.0-liter V8 engine with twin turbocharging from Porsche intends to preserve its legacy in the next decade, despite concerns about its future due to tightening regulations in Europe and beyond.
Henry Freimuth, head of the Porsche Panamera model line, shared the company’s plans for the future of the Porsche V8 engine with media representatives at the Australian Grand Prix in Formula 1. He noted that work is currently underway to adapt the Porsche V8 to meet the requirements of the Euro-7 standard, which is set to take effect in July 2029. However, noise level regulations may alter the engine’s sound characteristics.
«We know that this engine complies with the EU6 standard, and it poses no difficulty. We need to make some improvements, which our development team is currently working on. Thus, we will be able to bring this V8 engine in line with EU7 requirements, even without using a hybrid system, as the requirements have changed slightly,» Freimuth emphasized in an interview with Car Sales.
It was recently reported that Porsche is reconsidering the naming of its most powerful electric vehicles. Currently, engineers at the German brand are trying to resolve this issue. While previously models with internal combustion engines and enhanced performance were designated as Turbo, this nomenclature no longer fits for electric vehicles.
